Salem to Receive New Community Park
Soon the City of Salem will be adding a new park to the community, with the land being purchased by summer of 2016. The location of the new park will be on the Fairview property in South Salem, which will be bring the amount of parks in Salem up to 49.
“[The park will be] Approximately 29 acres,” said Toni Whitler, a member of park operations and planning of Salem Oregon. “This park will have beautiful scenery all around, and will be an excellent addition to Salem’s extensive list of parks.”
Currently, park officials of Salem are still conducting public meetings about the park, and will be performing surveys related to different factors about the park.
“I think a new park would be cool to have,” Sean Riester, ‘17 said. “It would give people more places to run and bike in.”
“[It is standard] for a community park to include a playground, picnic tables and benches, reservable shelters, trails and paths, and at least two practice or game sports such as baseball, cricket, rugby, soccer, or softball. Also, basketball and/or tennis courts, restrooms, and basic site furnishings,” Whitler said.
This means that other options not listed above will be discussed at the community meetings for this new park, and the people of Salem will decide whether or not to add other things that make this park even more special. The next community meeting will be held on Feb. 3, at 6:30 p.m.
“Some community parks have amphitheaters and hold concerts or movies. Some may hold large sports tournaments or walking/biking events. A community park does allow for a group to hold a large event, like a family reunion, but they have to tell us first by asking for a “permit” to use the park. This lets Parks Operations know what we need to do to support the event with extra trash cans, maybe even porta-potties if it is a large crowd. It also gives us an opportunity to work with the group so their event is sure to be a success,” Whitler said.
More information on the park is available on the City of Salem’s website, where anyone can give input on their opinion.
