SUPER Movies of 2016
Taking up an ambitious goal, Marvel Studios (MCU), Fox Entertainment, and DC Entertainment have set out to release seven new movies in 2016. For all Marvel or DC Comic book fans, or fans superhero movies in general, it’s a great time to go out and see these new releases. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically, will be releasing Captain America: Civil War, and Doctor Strange.
“I’m always so excited when a new Marvel movie comes out! I know it’ll be filled with action and humor, and won’t disappoint,” Scott Ludford ‘18 said.
Fox will be releasing X-men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, and Gambit. DC will release Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
The first of the Fox movie releases for 2016 is Deadpool, which is set to premier on Feb. 12. This movie will tell the story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary, Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to an experiment that was supposed to cure his cancer, receives accelerated-healing powers, disfigured skin, and a twisted, dark sense of humor. As the antihero, Deadpool [Ryan Reynolds], will use his newfound mutation to take down the man who almost destroyed his life.
Next up is the DC movie Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is a follow up to 2013’s Man of Steel, and is set to release on March 25. It is set to portray the battle between Batman [Ben Affleck], Gotham city’s vigilante and Superman [Henry Cavill], whose god-like powers, if left unchecked, may pose a threat. The world around them, in the meantime, is not only worried about which hero it needs, but is also unknowingly in danger. In the midst of their private war it is questionable whether the heroes will be in time to save mankind from the new danger that has risen.
Another entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Captain America: Civil War; which will be released on May 6. This time the battle is between Avengers Iron Man [Robert Downey Jr.] and Captain America [Chris Evans] who are on two sides of a superhero registration act. Suffering the fallout from the destruction of the fictional country of Sokovia in last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the team is forced to choose whether they stay on the government’s radar or if they anonymous.
“I absolutely love Marvel movies and superheroes and I cannot wait for the third installment of the Avengers in 2018,” Meg Takara ‘18 said.
On May 27, Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse comes out. This comic-based action movie follows up on X-Men: Days of Future Past. The storyline is centered on the first ever, immortal mutant Apocalypse [Oscar Isaac], whom after awakening views the modern human race less than adequate. As a result he recruits a team of mutants to try and “purify” humanity, thus far creating a new world order. This in turn leads to Mystique [Jennifer Lawrence] and Charles Xavier [James McAvoy] forming a team of young X-Men in an attempt save humanity.
DC’s Suicide Squad is due for release August 5 with a PG-13 rating. The storyline’s dark tone is that of incarcerated supervillains performing dangerous black op missions. They do so for a secret agency in hope of receiving leniency. It include supervillains such as the Harley Quinn [Margot Robbie], Deadshot [Will Smith], and The Joker [Jared Leto].
A spinoff to the X-men movie franchise is Fox’s Gambit, which releases on Oct. 7. Remy LeBeau [Channing Tatum] is a former skilled thief who formed part of the X-men team whose mutant powers allow him to mentally create and control kinetic energy. His weapon of choice and signature style are the kinetically charged playing cards that function like explosives, which he uses against his opponents.
Nov. 4 is the release date for the second MCU release of 2016: Dr.Strange. Dr. Stephen Strange [Benedict Cumberbatch] is an neurosurgeon whose career is destroyed after motor-vehicle accident. Soon after, he is taken under the wing of the “Ancient One,” [Tilda Swinton] a sorcerer who teaches him skills to defend the world against the malevolent.
So for anyone who is a DC, Marvel, Fox or superhero fan in general, get ready. Do not miss out on watching them while they are out on the big screen. Grab some popcorn, a comic book shirt, and invite MCU buddies. With all the new movies releasing throughout the year, there will be plenty of opportunities to watch at least one of them. As for the hardcore fans, they will be looking forward to every single one of these movies.
