Athlete Spotlight: Evina Westbrook
Evina Westbrook, a junior point guard at South, plays basketball on the girls varsity team. Westbrook plays basketball because she “can’t see me not playing basketball, it’s just a part of my life.”
Westbrook started playing basketball in the fourth grade with boys, but did not start playing with girls until the eighth grade.
“My inspiration to start playing basketball would be my brother and cousin because Ii grew up watching them play, and when I started playing I fell in love with the game,” Westbrook ‘17 said.
There are a lot of rules for playing basketball, but one that Westbrook says is “to have a good attitude and be a good teammate are some good rules, because no one wants to play with people who are grumpy and disrespectful.”
Westbrook has been ranked number 3 in the nation by ESPN. Last year Westbrook helped lead the girls basketball team to their first championship since 1976.
