With spring just around the corner, the thought of spring cleaning is beginning to come into people’s minds. Then there are the questions that follow; Why bother? Is it really necessary? This is not the only time one could clean their house. As the saying goes, “a clean house is a sign of a misspent life.”
Spring cleaning had originally come around because during winter, the house would be closed up with a wood or coal burning fireplace heating the house for months, thus getting soot all over the walls and furniture. Nowadays, with new technology to heat houses, that is no longer necessary.
“Spring cleaning is still necessary, in my opinion. My mom makes me do it every spring,” Olivia Borello ‘18 said.
Still, people often put cleaning off until it is all built up around spring time, making cleaning the house thoroughly seem like a laborious and daunting task.
“Every spring my mom makes me and my sister help her gut the house and we all spend the next few days cleaning every nook and cranny until the house is spotless,” Zoe Perkins ‘18 said.
Perhaps spring cleaning is not quite as necessary now as it had been before modern day heaters, but it is sure to be a tradition in American households that shows no signs of leaving any time soon.
