Garage sales are a big thing around spring and summer to earn extra money and to acquire more space. With a numerous amount of garage sales going on at the same time, having the ideal presentation is the key to attracting buyers. Taking the part of an entrepreneur and setting up a successful garage sale can be a little intimidating, but by advertising, having a layout, price tags, and by not overpricing, the garage sale can be successful.
“When going to a garage sale the first thing that I look for is it to be organize and for people to be polite,” Stephanie Salvador ‘16 said.
Advertising around one’s local area with minimal decorative signs will attract the attention of customers. Having the signs being decorative to an extreme can drive people away. On the signs, the hour from when it starts and when it ends, and the direction to where the garage sale takes place should be on it. The wording on the signs should be visible enough for people when driving past it.
When shopping at any store the first thing that is seen is the layout of the merchandise; the neater the layout is the easier the merchandise will be visible for the customers. In a garage sale, the neater the layout is the more likely a person will find an item to purchase. Arranging items by category such as their own category for clothing items, electronics, books, and knick knacks.
Having price tags on the items being sold will help both the buyer and seller. Customers will not be hesitating to ask for the price which will make more time to just not find and ask. As for sellers, if there is price tags, maybe the buyers will not ask to lower the price, and will not hesitate to think of a price when being asked how much an item is.
Not overpricing is one of the most important things when hosting a garage sale; people go to garage sales to find items that are not expensive. Overpricing can push people away from buying.
Advertising, having a layout, price tags, and not overpricing will be helpful to having a successful yard sale. By doing so, the shoppers coming could spread the word to their friends, attracting more potential buyers.
