The South High baseball team is already half way through their season this year with five wins and nine losses. One of the losses was to Sprague, but players are still optimistic.
“The season is off to a rough start losing to Sprague, but I think we are a good team that has a chance of winning the league title and have a lot of success in future years. I really think that we have some potential to do some good things when we have a game where we put all the little things of baseball all together and work as a team,” Jonathon Thompson ‘18 said.
According to Head Baseball Coach Chris Riley, the team is making their best efforts.
“We are getting better everyday. Currently, we are 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the Greater Valley Conference. Guys are working very hard and improving which is what you want to see at this point in the year. We went through a stretch early in league play where we had trouble hitting the ball but that is coming around. The next couple weeks will be huge on determining how we finish in league and our seeding for play-offs. I still think our best baseball is in front of us,” Riley said. “Seniors Gabe Matthews and Tony Phong are both hitting the ball very well right now and are amongst two of the better hitters in our league. Senior Bryan Kelly, has been pitching great his last couple of outings. He is doing a great job at throwing strikes where he wants to a getting a lot of ground ball and fly ball outs.”
The last two games were Saxon losses, one of them to Churchill [6-4] and the most recent to Pine Creek [11-1].
