The finalists for the Mid-Valley Sports Awards Player of the Year award in baseball, softball, tennis, golf, and track and field have been announced, with several finalists including South students. On June 7, the awards will be presented to the winners at the Salem Convention Center.
One of the boys golf finalists is Trevor Lawrence ‘16. He placed fourth in the district after shooting 153 at the GVC district meet and winning a playoff.
Two South Salem students are girls golf finalists, including Ellie Slama ‘17 and Ashley Zhu ‘18. Slama won the GVC district and has been one of South’s strongest players all season. Zhu placed third at districts, and was up for vote as Statesman Journal’s Athlete of the Week on April 12.
Alex Fedor qualifies for the award in the boys tennis category, as he placed second in the GVC districts. Meanwhile, for girls tennis, the doubles team of Jillian and Lauren Studer ‘17 also placed second.
Senior Gabe Matthews ‘16 qualifies in baseball. He signed his letter of intent to play college baseball for the University of Oregon back in November. Matthews is a shortstop and pitcher, and is hitting .413 with a .609 slugging percentage, with 14 runs scored this season.
