South Salem High School’s track and field team competed at districts on May. 12 and 13 against Forest Grove, North Salem, West Salem, Sprague, McMinnville, Mckay, Sprague and West Albany High School. The team put in individual and team work, team bonding was a big aspect in this year’s season.
“The team has been great, everyone works hard and tries their best.There is so much positive energy, even if you are not the best. We all have a strong team bonding which makes practice fun to attend to. I believe the team will do great at districts, we have so many individuals who take this sport to heart which is exciting to see,” Maygua Zavala ‘16 said.
The team competed against eight other Greater Valley Conference high schools in the season, with their biggest victory against Mckay High School resulting in 1st with 237 points. On the first day of districts, the boys varsity placed sixth, while the girls varsity placed seventh, placing the team in sixth place. On the second and last day, South took first place in the 300 hurdles and triple jump by Joseph Carey, Alex Sanchez took first place in the shot pot, with an overall placement of seventh place.
“This is my first year ever doing track and I am very happy that I joined because we are doing really good. A lot of preseason practices and running on our own has helped us improved. I think the dedication and motivation that the Saxon team has is incredible and it’s comforting to know that everyone supports one another,” Stephanie Salvador ‘16 said.
Going on to State will be Joseph Carey in the long jump, triple jump and 300 Intermediate hurdles and Alex Sanchez in the shot put. As for the girls Anna Chau will continue on in the 3000 and Kaia Alexander in the Javelin.
