Almost five years after the release of the last movie set in the Harry Potter universe, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, J.K. Rowling has announced that fans will finally be getting more of the series. The movie adaptation of the 2001 book “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is set to release in November, and the eighth book of the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” will be released in July. This book will be released following the scripted play version that will only be available to people in the United Kingdom.
These new additions to the book and movie series have had mixed reviews from fans. Some are excited to be receiving a continuation of the series, as well as a spin off.
“I have high expectations for the new Harry Potter movie because of how nostalgic the originals are to me. I like the connection to the original books and movies, and I hope it turns out to be a good spin off film,” Kylee Harris ‘19 said.
Others, however, think that the series’ conclusion should be left as is, without any continuation. Fans may not be as receptive to the spin off either, as they believe it may use the popularity of the original series to promote its success, rather than its own talent.
“The name Harry Potter carries a lot of weight, even the fact that it’s within the same universe will give it a lot of popularity,” Kennedy O’Day ‘19 said.
The movie will make its premier on Nov. 18, and the book will be released on July 31. Only time will tell if the new additions to the Harry Potter universe will live up to fans’ expectations.
