Saxons track and field had their first practice of the 2017 season on Feb. 27. Instead of as a team, track and field events and rankings are focused on individual times and records. Achieving new personal records is the main goal for most of the participating athletes. The Saxons work throughout the season to insure that they achieve personal records and improve their performance.
“I focus on working on everything technically with my coach and getting in the weight room every day,” Alex Sanchez ‘18 said. He is a thrower for the Saxons, and made it to the state competition last season.
The South Salem coaching staff welcomed a new sprinting coach and a new weight training coach.
“I’m excited about the new coaching and getting new input,” Chloe Bryant ‘18 said.
South is feeling confident, with two returning throwers, Kaia Alexander ‘19 and Sanchez, and one long distance runner, Anna Chau ‘19, who made it to State last year. The Saxons did not have a good feel for their conference competition until their first dual on Mar. 21 against McMinnville.
The dual suffered a long delay due to a storm warning that occurred in the middle of some of the athletes’ events. The Saxons faced a loss against the Grizzlies at the dual on McMinnville’s track and field.
