On April 7, 2017, both the band and the orchestra performed at the Western Oregon University Invitational festival. South’s Chamber Orchestra received a score of 79 and South’s Wind Ensemble received a score of. Both orchestra and band qualified to perform at the Oregon School Activity Association [OSAA] competition. Band will perform on May 13 at Oregon State University’s LaSells Stewart Center. Unfortunately there is a scheduling conflict between IB testing days and State competition, the orchestra will perform on May 11. Chemistry only has eight people testing and three of them are in orchestra.
“Personally I think it should be schedule better and both are very important events,” Corwin Bowersox ‘17, one of the three testers who are testing in chemistry, said.”If they care then they would not have scheduling conflicts, they have the resources to schedule effectively.”
Chuck Chamberlain is currently working to find a way for the testers to do both the test and perform on the same day. In the past, students had to test as early as 5:30 a.m. in order for them to be able to perform.
“I think we [the band] did well at Districts and I think we still have a lot to improve on before State,” Sorcha O’Connor ‘18, one of members in band said.
Chamber Orchestra also went to the High School 2017 Orchestra Invitational Festival where they received scores of 81, 84, and 89 on April 13. Last year neither the band or orchestra placed in State.
“It was so much fun to participate in districts,” Megha Joshi ‘19, a member of the Chamber Orchestra at South, said.
West received first place, followed by South’s Symphonic Choir with a second place ranking, and the OSAA is still processing whether or not the choir is able to go to districts. Chamber Women’s Choir received scores of 93, 91, 78, and received a ranking of sixth place. Last year the Symphonic Choir placed first place with a total score of 348, followed by West and Sprague. Choir will perform on May 6 at George Fox University.
