South’s drama program will be presenting the Clumsy Custard Horror Show on May 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 7 p.m. with one showing at 2 p.m. on May 20. Written by William Gleason, the Clumsy Custard Horror Show is a comedic play that contains traditional fairytale elements with ironic twists.
The play takes place in a kingdom divided; Zob Proper is ruled by King Dumb, whose daughter, Princess Prince, has just come of age for marriage. In an act of villainy, Dacron, the ruler of Zob Improper, kidnaps the Princess. Following her kidnapping, battles must be fought and jokes must be made in order to save the day.
Olivia Sweeney ‘19 plays Princess Prince, and describes the show as a mix between Princess Bride, The Labyrinth and Monty Python and the Holy Grail-making fun of traditional fairytales as much as it is one.
“I like the show because you can have a lot of fun with the characters,” Sweeney said. “It’s not like a drama; you don’t have to stay within your character the entire time, you can have fun with it and make a lot of choices with your character.”
Princess Prince’s love interest in the play is the dashing hero Swashbuck Valpariso, portrayed by Noah Camuso ‘18, a seemingly unassuming man who wields the famed magic sword. Valpariso’s comic relief supplying companion is a three-horned creature named Worfle, played by Marc Wassom ‘17.
“My favorite part about being in the show,” Wassom said, “is having the opportunity to work again with people that I’ve worked with before. I’ve been in shows with Olivia Sweeney and just a bunch of other people that I’ve come to grow to love, and it’s been a good experience.”
