Adapted from the 1989 Disney film of the same name, the musical “The Little Mermaid” was brought to the Broadway stage in 2008. This year, South’s drama program will bring the full length musical to the Rose Theater starring Olivia Sweeney ‘19 as the mermaid Princess Ariel and Briargate Curry ‘19 as Prince Eric.
The entire show, including understudies and ensembles, were casted from auditions and callbacks held in late May and early June 2017 . The cast and crew have held a full read through and production meetings since, and have started rehearsals. “The Little Mermaid” will be directed by Robert Salberg, who directed the show at Howard Street in 2014.
“I think the special thing about this show is the collection of people brought in to participate,” Sweeney said. “It’s so cool meeting people with different experience levels, and especially different backgrounds in choir, band, orchestra, dance team, theater and many others. This show is a huge production that can really bring together our performance community at South!”
Performances of “The Little Mermaid” are currently set for the first two weekends of Dec. Updates and future information on the musical can be found on the Saxon Drama Facebook page.
