On Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire at 10:08 p.m. into a crowd of people going to a country music concert in Las Vegas.
Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo reported to CNN that the shooting was at a “progressive, successive rate” that lasted roughly nine minutes. Currently, there are 59 people dead and over 500 injured after the event, including the shooter. The shooting has been dubbed one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern American history.
In response to the shooting, James Aldean [the country singer that people were going to see] has postponed his future tour dates until Oct. 12 to allow people to mourn and be close with their friends and family.
President Trump responded to this event on Air Force One during an off-camera gaggle with reporters on Tuesday, Oct. 3. He had an open discussion on gun control and said, “At some point perhaps that will come. That’s not today.” One reporter asked Trump whether Paddock should be able to obtain all of those weapons, to which Trump replied that he would discuss the subject on another day.
Trump has planned to meet law enforcement regarding the Las Vegas shooting on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
Police are currently investigating the motives behind the event and found that Paddock had 12 rifles in his hotel suite outfitted with “bump stocks.” Bump stocks are devices that allow a rifle to shoot hundreds of rounds per minute. The police are also waiting for the return of Paddock’s girlfriend, who was in the Philippines at the time of the shooting, for questioning. Investigators are looking to see if the event was planned prior to when Paddock chose to open fire at the country concert.
More information will be provided as the investigation continues.
