Every fall, the North Salem Vikings clash with the South Salem Saxons for the annual Mayor’s Cup. This rivalry has been active since 1954 when South was created. Records go out the window for this matchup. The Vikings have won the cup 17 times in the 64 year span. Last season, the Vikings beat the Saxons for the first time in ten years and the second time in sixteen years.
Both teams have a current record of 1-4. This game is expected to be a heated contest as this may be the final Mayor’s Cup, due to North Salem moving down to 5A. The Saxons are coming off a 2 point win over McMinnville last week, and the Vikings are coming off a tough loss to West Salem. The Saxons have a very strong defensive line, which could make it a very tough game for the Vikings.
