Senate Bill 754, signed by Kate Brown last year, has made Oregon the 5th state raising the legal smoking age to 21. SB 754 [Senate Bill] comes in effect this year so anyone born in 2000 and up will have to legally wait till they are 21 to purchase tobacco products.
According to Oregon Health Authority Public Health Division, in 2009 tobacco use took the lead of preventable deaths in oregon with 7,000 estimated deaths.
Gov. Kate Brown said during a visit to Cottage Grove that, “I want to make sure that we continue to reduce the number of young people starting to smoke, but it’s also critical that we reduce the number of people smoking.” Shop owners who sell tobacco products will have to enforce this new law in their establishments.
