As of March 1, South has its own coffee business in room 207. Cara Bobeda and her students run the business from the classroom, with all coffee costing $2.00. So far, only teachers can order coffee, but some teachers collect orders for their students as well.
Orders are taken on Thursdays in first period, and are quickly becoming a classroom favorite among the classes that participate. The purpose of the business is primarily to teach the students running it. Their class, World of Work, is about learning the proper skills to move into the real world and work outside of high school.
“We have to learn how to problem solve…you have to be very consistent, you’re supposed to stay true to the work you do,” John Caudillo ‘18, a student in the World of Work class said. John is the assistant manager of Saxon Smart Brew. He enjoys working with the younger students and seeing them become workers in the class.
Bobeda and her students thought of the business as an opportunity to grow and learn as workers. Saxon Smart Brew was made possible by the Youth Transition Program (YTP), who gave South a grant to run the business with the help of Priscilla Gest, a transition specialist for South Salem High School representing the YTP. Gest is helping Bobeda with the shop and its growth.
“We want to get a commercial machine, we want to get a big cart, and then definitely expand so we could do it on a daily basis in the school,” Gest said in an interview with Bobeda discussing her hopes for the future of the business..
