Highschool students in Texas are now required to take a class that teaches students how to deal with law enforcement during a traffic stop in order to graduate. The hoped outcome of having to take these classes is to help ease tension between law enforcement and students because of many shootings by police of students that are unarmed in these recent years.
Guidelines that are given to instructors to teach are:
- “Rights concerning interactions with police officers.”
- “Proper behavior for civilians and peace officers during interactions.”
- “The role of law enforcement and the duties and responsibilities of peace officers.”
- “How to file a complaint or compliment on behalf of a police officer”
Should Oregon require high school students to take a class that teaches how to interact with law enforcement for when a traffic stop occurs? In 2017, 68 unarmed civilians have been killed by law enforcement . So far in the year 2018 there has been 18 unarmed civilians killed, 8 less than 2017, according to the Washington Post.
If a similar law passes in Oregon, required classes in order to graduate would include: english, math, science, history, and a class that teaches students how to go about interactions of police officers. South Salem would have to fund more teachers to teach, rooms would be filled with 30-40 students, like other classes, and students that have electives would have one switched out for this class to be taken.
