Souths Dance & Drill Team, has made a comeback this year. The girls got a new coach last year, and now they have started competing more often. Recently they participated in their first dance competition of the season, hosted by Reynolds High School.
This year they started competing in category competitions which are separated by different styles of dance. The team has never done that before, as they usually only dance to Hip-Pop, but this year they are trying something new for smaller competitions which involves new choreographs dancing to Jazz.
“ I was so surprised and excited to know we placed third. We worked hard so I felt like it payed off when we performed. Yes, obviously we could have improved some aspects of our dance since we were judged by the complexity but overall it was an enjoyable experience,” Jasmine Zavala ‘20.
The dance team got to compete in the Small Jazz Category. The small category is for small teams with very few dancers. This year there is about 12 dancers on the team. Some of their routines consisted of dancing to mashups of the songs, “ Girls Like You” by Maroon 5, and “Woman” by Kesha. The girls worked as a team and placed third place in the small jazz category.
” My goal is to get our team to be more confident I think we have 11 or 12 people. Also to be more confident and create a dance that we enjoy and that we will have a lot of fun doing it. Dance doesn’t get a whole lot of recognition and we are a small team and we want to try our hardest,” Meredith Hegewald ’19 said.
Placing third at their first competition in their opening competition, the team now knows what to improve on once they compete. This year the dance team will be busy competing in the 6A Dance & Drill Conference, and also the smaller competitions throughout the state. They will give them a chance to grow as a team, and gain more experience.
