South’s boys swim team is undefeated this season lead behind a young swimmer, Julian Melton ‘21. Melton made an immediate impact on the Saxon swim team this season, finishing the regular season with nine first place finishes and one second place finish.
“Julian is already one of the fastest on the team and in the district and has another two years to continue to have great swims for the Saxons” Coach Eric Richey said, “Every race he gives 100% and sets a standard for others to try to achieve.”
Melton is already a top swimmer in South’s history for the 200 individual medley (IM) and the 100 breaststroke. He currently is placed ninth in both these events with times of 2:03.88 for the individual medley and 1:02.87 for the breaststroke.
Along with his success in the pool, Melton hopes to continue to grow as a leader to his team over his next few years at South.
“I like talking to the non-club swimmers, people I don’t normally interact with everyday and just encouraging them to keep going,” Melton said.
Due to inclement weather forcast the venue has been changed for this year’s district meet as the Salem-Keizer schools will compete today at 2:30 p.m. at the Kroc Center. The Bend schools will be competing today as well at Juniper Swim and Fitness in Bend. The swim state tournament will take place next week.
