As the weather turns colder and the days grow shorter, South’s fall sports teams wrap up their seasons. Cross country, soccer, volleyball and football all have played their last game or ran their last meet. 

Girls Cross Country

The girls cross country team also had a successful season. At Districts, many of the runners set personal records and ran to a fourth place finish behind Summit, Bend and McKay. The team was led by Mackenzie Caprino ‘20, with a time of 19.28.10, who placed 12th. The girls did not qualify for state because only the top three teams in Mid-Valley Conference advance. However, Caprino was named to the All-Conference second team and Paige Trautman ‘22 and Sophia Miller ‘23 were awarded honorable mentions.

Boys Cross Country

The boys cross country team had a very successful season this year. On Nov. 9, they ran in the state meet and placed 17th as a team. The team was led by Justin Saunders Tyquiengco ‘21 who placed 69th individually, with a time of 16:23.30, and Evan Gonzalez ‘21 who placed 75th, with a time of 16:27.50. 

The weekend before state, they placed 3rd in Mid-Valley Conference Districts behind Summit and Bend. At Districts, the team had four runners place in the top 12. Tyquiengco ran to a 7th place finish, Gonzalez placed 9th, Kelvin Wilson ‘23 placed 11th and Shayn Carmichael Kohn ‘21 placed 12th. Because of their performances at Districts and throughout the season Tyquiengco was named to the All-Conference  first team and Gonzalez, Wilson and Carmichael Kohn were all named to the second team. 

Boys Soccer

The boys varsity soccer team ended the season ranked 16th OSAA 6A. They had a league record of 5-1-1 and an overall record of 9-4-2. They were very successful in the All-Conference team rosters, with Stuart Heringer ‘21, Alexis Luna Ramirez ‘21, Fernando Hidalgo ‘20 and David Panov ‘20 being named to the first team. Braque Pike ‘20 was named to the second team and Julian Rivas Delgado ‘22 and David Garcia Campos ‘23 received honorable mentions. Like the girls team, they advanced to state playoffs, but lost 1-0 to South Eugene in the first round. 

Girls Soccer

South’s girls soccer team finished the season with an overall record of 6-8-1 and a league record of 4-2-1. They were ranked 19th in OSAA 6A and advanced to state playoffs. Unfortunately, in the first round of playoffs, the girls fell to Cleveland. Although they played well, they were unable to stop Cleveland from scoring three times and were only able to regain one of theses lost goals. 

Despite this loss, Marina Foster ‘20 and Maddie Bingham ‘21 were named to the All-Conference first team. Meanwhile, Maria Juarez ‘20 and Kaylee Hall ‘21 were named to the second team, and Anna Burger ‘20 and Allison Hmura ‘20 were named as honorable mentions.

Football

The Varsity football games always draw a big crowd of Saxons. Although the team did not have their best season this year, South students continued to show up to cheer on their team and show their school spirit. The boys ended the season ranked fourth in OSAA and 7th in the MVC. They went 0-4 in league games and 2-7 overall. Because of their record, they did not qualify for state. Despite this, they had many team members named to the Mid-Valley Conference All-Conference teams.  Samiu Letisi ‘21, Gabe Johnson ‘21, Parker Johnson ‘20 and Tu Umulap ‘20 were named to the first team. Dustin Kunze ‘21 was named to the second team. Finally, Sangato Letisi ‘20, Zach Webster ‘20, Griffin Gardner ‘22, Ryan Rickman ‘20, Mikah Posey ‘21 and Reign Bryant ‘20 were all awarded honorable mentions. 

Volleyball

The Varsity volleyball team wrapped up their season a few weeks ago. They played the whole season with spirit and ended with a record of 5-9 in the league and 9-15 overall. With this record they were ranked 34th in OSAA and 5th in the Mid-Valley Conference [MVC]. Because of their MVC ranking they did not advance to the state tournament this season.
