Once Upon A Mattress Is Not One To Sleep On

South’s theatre class will performing their next musical, Once Upon a Mattress December 6, 7 and 8, as well as 12 ,13 and 14. This is a story based off of The Princess and The Pea.

“I really love musicals and South only does one every two years,” Hunter Miller ‘21, the voice behind Princess Winnifred, said. “I really like especially the experience with working with both the actors and ensemble and then also the technicians in the show to make a different piece of theatre.”

Once Upon a Mattress is about a king who can no longer speak, a queen who goes to great lengths to get her son married, an outspoken princess and a knight that is eager for marriage.

“The relationship that he (Prince Dauntless) has with every character in the show is just very funny,” Jackson Mathews ‘21 said.

A witch bestowed upon him a curse by which he could never speak again. Since this curse, the queen has taken control and decreed that no one shall marry till her son does. So, a knight sets out to find a princess to marry the prince. He returns with Princess Winnifred, who is exactly the kind of princess the queen thinks Prince Dauntless will hate, but to her surprise the prince begins to fall in love with the princess. So the queen sets a near impossible task for the princess. She places a pea under 20 mattresses to see if the princess will notice. Princess Winnifred does notice. The queen is outraged and attempts to throw the princess out of the castle, but Prince Dauntless stands up to her which leads to him being healed.

“I really like the queen’s costume, I always think the queen is the best in the show because it  takes up a lot of space and it represents their character,” Maddy Pierson ‘20 said who doubles as not only head of set but also Lady Larkin.

Once Upon a Mattress is showing on December 6, 7 and 12, 13 at 7 p.m. and at 1 p.m. on December 8 and 14.
