Oregon House Republicans Subpoenaed For Tomorrow

Last week, House Democrats in the legislature voted to subpoena House Republicans, who have fled the state house. Their subpoenas require them to appear tomorrow, Mar. 5, at 1 p.m., in front of the House Committee on Rules to explain the reason for their absences.

“This is an extraordinary measure, brought on by the extraordinary actions of the House Republican caucus.”

Rep. Paul Holvey (D-Eugene)

The Republican members of the Senate walked out on Feb. 24, with their companions in the House walking out soon after. They have not shown up at the Capitol since then.

The Republicans have been absent to prevent a vote on the contentious climate policy, Cap and Trade. This would place a cap on the state’s total carbon emissions and require major companies to purchase or trade credits in order to emit carbon. Overtime, the number of credits will decrease and eventually it will become more economically viable for Oregon’s biggest polluters to switch to greener energy sources.

If the Republicans refuse to honor their subpoenas they could face legal consequences, including fines and the possibility of arrest. If they do appear, the Democrats are likely to try to force a floor session and obtain a quorum. Regardless of if the Republicans honor their subpoenas or not, tomorrow will be an important day for our legislature.
