Yesterday, under Governor Kate Brown’s direction all Oregon public schools will be closed starting Monday, March 16 with the plan that students will return to school on Wednesday, April 1. This closure is due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus [COVID-19]. During the closure, all sports and extracurriculars will be canceled. This is along with the Salem-Keizer School District’s 30-day suspension of all non-essential school-based activities which began Thursday, March 12 and will end Wednesday, April 8.
As of today, March 13, the following activities are cancelled for the Salem-Keizer District until the suspension ends on April 8:
- All school-based sports and extracurricular activities will be canceled.
- All non-essential group gatherings like school assemblies and fundraising events are canceled.
- All in-person parent-teacher conferences are canceled.
- All the concerts with spectators. However, the district has expressed that they may attempt to reschedule or explore live streaming options.
- All field trips or out-of-state events.
- Outdoor school is also canceled
- School dances and proms.
However, after April 8 these events are currently expected to occur as orginally scheduled. So, as of right now South’s prom on April 24 will occur as planned but this may change as the situation develops in the coming weeks.
