Approximately 200 people gathered on the steps of the Oregon State Capitol for the 5th consecutive weekend of Black Lives Matter protests on Saturday, June 27. The protest consisted of a few hours of speeches from community leaders, such as Shelaswau Crier, Gregg Simpson, Rian Gayle and others. They discussed school-resource officers, racism and accessibility in Salem, the school board and more.
Protestors
Protestors held signs, chanted and showed support for the Black Lives Matter movement at the rally on Saturday.
Speakers
Speakers discussed a variety of issues related to the Black Lives Matter movement, including racism in schools, the workplace and society in general.
Protestors Interact With Counter-Protestors
Some conflict occurred during the protest when a counter-protestor, and later three, arrived at the Capitol. Protestors grouped around the single counter-protestor at one point with raised fists and chanted “Black Lives Matter.”
Oregon State Police
Oregon State Police tried to keep a low profile at the protest on Saturday, with troopers remaining in the Capitol for much of the event. They only came out of the building when there was conflict between the protestors and counter-protestors.
