Salem, Oregon; Tues., Sept. 8

Smoke from the nearby Santiam Fire, also known as the Beachie Creek Fire, turned Salem skies varying hues of orange throughout the day on Tuesday, creating an apocalyptic scene.

Evacuation Center, Oregon State Fairgrounds; Wed., Sept. 9

The Oregon State Fairgrounds is currently serving as an evacuation center for people fleeing fires across the state. The fairgrounds is providing services to both people and their livestock who have been forced to evacuate. People are being given food and water, cots if necessary, places to park their vehicles and more. The volunteers are also caring for hundreds of animals, including more than 200 horses.

Salem, Oregon; Wed., Sept. 9

After Tuesday, Salem skies stayed a yellow, gray color from the smoke. The air quality has consistently been labelled “hazardous” due to the particulate.

Oregon State Correctional Institution; Wed., Sept. 9

The Oregon State Correctional Institution is among the Oregon prisons that were evacuated as the wildfires grew.

Silverton & Sublimity, Oregon; Wed., Sept. 9

Sublimity and Silverton have remained on a Level 2 evacuation order, “Get Set,” for several days. The smoke remains heavy and it is difficult to breathe outside, even after only a couple minutes.

United Way Donation Center, Salem, Oregon; Thurs., Sept. 10

United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley has been accepting and processing donations of supplies for evacuees over the past several days. Volunteers working at the building all day unload and organize the steady stream of donations. Donated supplies include everything from clothing to food to personal hygiene products to bedding and much more. Donations are continually distributed as needs arise.
