What is TMIS?
The idea behind TMIS is to summarize relevant information from across the district monthly in a short easy to read format. This is something new so feel free to send me an email at 733310@salemkeizer.org if you have any feedback or general comments about this format. On with the news!
SKPS officially commits to “antiracism”
During a board meeting, the Salem Keizer Public Schools [SKPS] Board of Directors voted four to two to approve an official resolution targeting racism. It mentions monitoring data, like discipline data as well as monitoring more broadly described “key performance indicators” to take appropriate action to mitigate issues. It officially accepts that there is an over-representation of students of color in special education, suspensions and expulsions in SKPS schools and an under-representation of students of color in talented and gifted and college-prep programs. Though this resolution seems to be mostly just paperwork for now, as there does not seem to be much action taken as a result of this commitment quite yet, but it seems like a step in the right direction.
COVID-19 Dashboard
Are you concerned about COVID-19? The district released a dashboard detailing COVID cases for every school in the district weekly, updated on the weekend. South is near the bottom [the schools are sorted in alphabetical order by default], with zero in each category as of writing, which is a good sign!
Teacher of the year nominations
On Nov. 23, the Oregon Department of Education opened up nominations for Oregon teacher of the year [as well as education support professional, a separate category for non-teachers]. Think a teacher at South is worthy of the title? Nominate them for TOY 2023 on the Oregon TOY website!
Incoming Cold Weather
As we approach December, cold weather approaches as well. Who does not love a snow day? That is if you know it is a snow day. After comprehensive distance learning last year, now is a nice time to make sure you are following the district’s emergency closures and delay announcements. It is available in the following formats:
- Alert Website
- RSS feed [if people even know what that is nowadays]
- Follow the district’s Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, though be aware that unlike the alert website and RSS feed, these are cluttered with unrelated posts.
That is it!
That is all for this month. Tune in on Dec. 17 for the next entry!
