On March 11, 2024, the community of South Salem organized a walk through Bush’s Pasture Park to reflect on the recent tragic event. Dozens of individuals walked to pay condolences to the victims of the tragedy. The community left handwritten notes, flowers and candles at the memorial for the victim who lost their life.
In addition, South Salem High School had a two-hour delay with school starting at 10:30 a.m. South used the delay to process the recent events and prepare to welcome students for the start of the new week.
Later in the same day, South received a bomb threat. An email sent out to students and families at 5:22 p.m. kept people informed about the threat. At 5:56 p.m. via email, the district was said to have investigated the threat and deemed it clear for the Saxon safety event planned that night to proceed.
The Saxon safety event took place from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Lower Commons following the clearing to discuss the past week’s events. This event included conversations surrounding the safety of students at South, ways to enhance safety moving forward, the district’s response to threats of violence and counseling support for students.
Counseling support and resources are available onsite for students at any time throughout the day.
