The 2024 Oscars were March 10 and there were many awards given and interesting events that happened.
With Jimmy Kimmel hosting, lots of popular presenters, fun performances and interesting nominations.
Actress/Actor in a Supporting Role
For Actress In A Supporting Role, the nominees were Emily Blunt, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera and Jodie Foster. The winner here was Da’Vine Joy Randolph. This was slightly unexpected but not a bad thing. I was mostly expecting either Emily Blunt or America Ferrera, mostly because of their talented performances but also because of the sheer popularity of their respective movies.
For Actor In A Supporting Role, the nominees were Robert Downey Jr., Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling and Mark Ruffalo. The winner was Robert Downey Jr. I think this was a well deserved win for Downey Jr., but I wouldn’t have been disappointed to see Ryan Gosling or Mark Ruffalo accepting that award. Gosling played a great Ken in Barbie and Ruffalo did amazing in Poor Things.
Makeup & Hairstyling
For Makeup & Hairstyling, the movies nominated were “Golda”, “Maestro”, “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” and “Society Of The Snow”. The Winner was “Poor Things” and “Society Of The Snow”. This decision did not surprise me at all and I thought it was the right choice. The show had great makeup choices that impacted the movie in just the right way. The hair and makeup made Emma Stone look like a completely different person in just the right way.
Costume Design
For Costume Design, the movies nominated were “Barbie”, “Killers Of The Flower Moon”, “Poor Things”, “Oppenheimer” and “Napoleon”. “Poor Things” was the winner for Costume Design. While the movie has unique and fairly cool costumes, I think “Barbie” was another really good option. Their costumes were colorful and perfectly captured the essence of the movie. Costume is also a pretty big part of “Barbie” and plays a big role in a lot of the scenes.
Cinematography
For Cinematography, the nominees were “El Conde”, “Killer Of The Flower Moon”, “Oppenheimer, “Maestro” and “Poor Things”. The clear winner here was “Oppenheimer”. The movie was absolutely beautiful and deserved this award. Hoyte van Hoytema did a wonderful job. Oppenheimer was full of beautiful shots the whole movie. Seeing the scenes that detail the power of the bomb were truly beautiful and made the movie deserving of the award.
Music: Original Score and Original Song
For Music (Original Score), the nominees were “American Fiction,” “Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers Of The Flower Moon and Poor Things.” The winner was “Oppenheimer.” This was a great choice as it was touching, suspenseful and its release improved this year’s cinema.
For Music (Original Song), the nominees were “What Was I Made For?” From “Barbie;” Music and Lyrics by Billie Ellish and Finneas O’Connell, “The Fire Inside from Flamin’ Hot”; Music and Lyrics by Diane Warren, “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie;” Music and Lyrics by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, “It Never Went Away from American Symphony”; Music and Lyrics by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson and Wahzhazhe “(A Song For My People)” from “Killers Of The Flower Moon”; Music and Lyrics by Scott George. The winner here was “What Was I Made For?” This is a beautiful song, it has many great qualities and details the struggle Barbie had through the movie. I think it was a pretty good choice, though I’m Just Ken had great composition and was overall a good song.
Actress/Actor in a Leading Role
For Actor In A Leading Role, the nominees were Bradley Cooper, Cillian Murphy, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright. The winner was Cillian Murphy. This was definitely the best choice. Murphy’s performance in Oppenheimer was great and full of emotion. It was clear he deserved this award.
For Actress In A Leading Role, the nominees were Emma Stone, Lily Gladstone, Annette Bening, Carey Mulligan and Sandra Huller. The winner was Emma Stone. In my opinion, the award definitely should have gone to Lily Gladstone. Not only was her performance in her movie amazing, but if she had won, she would have become the first native american actor to win an Oscar in an acting category.
Best Picture
For Best Picture, the nominees were “American Fiction,” “Anatomy Of A Fall,” “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers Of The Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things” and “The Zone Of Interest.” Oppenheimer was the winner here and I think it was the most obvious choice. I agree with Oppenheimer being the choice here. I would say Oppenheimer or Barbie were the crowd favorites, and while they are good movies that I wasn’t against winning, It definitely would have been nice to see another movie win.
The Oscars this year held a lot of awards for lots of great movies. There were lots of great events and performances from various artists. There were some decisions I thought could have been better but overall, this year’s Oscars were good.
