Kathy August teaches Dynamic Leadership and IB Applications 1. She has been working at South Salem High School since 2003 and will be starting a new chapter in her life as she transitions to retirement.
Her career in education started 44 years ago. The encouragement to become an educator came from one of her teachers.
“I was encouraged by my high school math teacher who thought I would be a good math teacher because I understood how intimidating math can be,” August said.
Retirement
During retirement, August plans to spend time with family and loved ones.
“I plan on enjoying spending time with my family and watching my grandchildren grow,” August said.
During the school year, August enjoys the fall weather, events, opportunities and everything in between.
“I love the fall because it is the start of a new year, full of promise. I love the cool weather, the fall colors and home football games. What is not to love?” August said.
Color Wars
Even though August will not be at South for future years, she leaves behind a legacy. Her involvement, ideas and spirit will be cherished at South for a long time to come. One of many things she will leave behind is one of the highly anticipated annual Color Wars assembly.
“I brought it to South from my school in California. It was very popular there and I knew it would be awesome here. I believe I started it in the spring of 2006. It is by far my favorite assembly because of all the enthusiasm and spirit generated,” August said.
Parting Message
As August opens the door to the next stage of her life, she leaves a message for all the students and staff at South.
“Thank you! Thank you for making my final years of teaching the most rewarding, memorable, impactful and insightful of my career. Our homecoming theme says it best ‘There is no place like home!’ That’s how I have always felt here – there is no place like South. Thank you for all the love and support, Saxons,” August said.
Starting in the second semester this year, Aaron Howard will be replacing her position as the activities director at South.
