National women in sports day is celebrated in the first week of February every year. Many students from high schools around Oregon demonstrated their support of this nationally recognized day.
“National women in sports day means a lot to me because of how far we have come from the old days when women were not allowed to participate in sports. My life would be so different without sports. Men and women are both equally valued and important. I think that, in sports, there should be equal opportunities.” Kamryn Dinito, a ninth grader at South Salem High said.
This day is dedicated to showing direct support to women.
“National women in sports day means every woman in a sport finally gets a spotlight on them so they can show what they can do.” Jocelyn Pierce, a ninth grader at South Salem High said.
Sports build character, physical and mental endurance, sportsmanship and the ability to work with others.
“I would probably not have as much courage; sports push me to try my limits and try as hard as I can in life.” Kira Brownell, a ninth grader at Sprague High School said.
Advancements Within Women in Sports
Women sports are making advancements every year giving opportunities to women to pursue sports they love.
Along with advancements in sports for women, we have also seen long strides in gender equality for everyone.
“Gender equality is important to me because no one should be told they are not able to do something they are more than capable of doing just because of their gender.” Tevy Snook, a ninth grader at Cascade High School said.
The battle for equality in sports is something that many women have fought for and continue to fight for. These women have represented female athletes so well and show others what our greatness can look like.
“As well as appreciating them for never giving up, and for pushing through the obstacles when people said they would never make it. Whether these ladies end up knowing it or not, I will continuously thank them by reflecting on their example and encouraging young girls for generations to come. The same way they inspired me. This day shows us that there is hope for a breakthrough in women’s athletics. Because of this day, I am reminded that anyone can make an impact and that is something that I want to accomplish in my life.” Maylee Greer, a senior at South Salem High School said.
Anyone who works hard deserves recognition and that is what national women in sports day is all about. Recognizing the women who have played and made this day possible and the girls who play sports today.
