Hayward Field Magic
Double state qualifier Calvin Stewart, ’26, showed out on Hayward field today, winning the boys high jump and placing 14 out of 18 in the long jump. He did so with marks of six feet and seven and three quarters of inch and 20 feet and four and half inches, respectively.
Historic High Jump Season
Stewart, who has qualified in high jump for OSAA’s Track and Field Championships each of the last three years, has had a historic season. He started his season campaign with a South Salem school record, jumping six feet and seven and a half inches at the CVC Relay Meet, hosted by Sprague High School. Then, two days later, Stewart broke his own record by two inches, notching a win at the Oregon Relays with six feet and nine and a half inches. This mark placed him as the second ranked high jumper in the State of Oregon, only a quarter of an inch behind first. Although he did not break his own record at OSAA’s meet, he did record his eighth high jump win of the season, and number 18 of his entire career.
Returning to the Pit
As for the long jump, the OSAA meet is only the second time Stewart has long jumped since his eighth grade year at Judson Middle School, where he had a personal record of 17 feet and one inch. He picked the event back up this year at the Central Valley Conference meet, placing second with a personal record mark of 21 feet and eight and three quarters of an inch. However, with this performance at OSAA’s championships, it marks Stewart’s only time of not placing on the OSAA’s podium, receiving podium honors in three out of four of his state meet appearances.
