South Salem High School student Isla Thomas ‘27 has turned her passion for nails into a thriving business, Nails by Isla, which has quickly gained praise from her classmates.
Thomas began experimenting with nail art long before starting to take clients. After a year of practice perfecting her technique, she was ready to turn her hobby into a business.
“What inspired me to start my business was seeing my parents build their companies and trying to expand my experience in the business for my future,” said Thomas.
Thomas was also influenced by the business program at South.
“I have taken almost all of the business classes at South,” said Thomas.
The classes have been particularly helpful in gaining specific knowledge, such as expanding her business and finding and creating loyal customers. Owning a business as a student has its challenges, particularly when it comes to time management.
“The clients make my schedule. Some months I will be fully booked, while other months, I only get a few appointments,” said Thomas.
Even with a fluctuating schedule, Thomas finds the experience rewarding. One of her favorite parts of the job is that she gets to meet and connect with new people.
“I have made some of my closest friends through doing nails, and I am forever grateful,” said Thomas.
Nails by Isla offers gel manicures, Gel-X full sets and gel pedicures upon request. Thomas sets her prices by evaluating the clients’ design ideas, breaking down the cost of supplies, and factoring in the time it takes to complete the service.
“What I most like about her work is that you can ask for anything. Isla is affordable and does a great job; her prices are reasonable and she always works her schedule in order to fit people in,” said client Lola Willmschen ‘28.
Willmschen has gotten her nails done multiple times and in various styles by Thomas. She has even gone as far as to recommend the business to other students.
Another client, Tuesday Garrison ‘27, also praises Thomas’ creativity and attention to detail.
“I like her ability to accomplish many different styles well, and with extreme accuracy and detail,” said Garrison.
While there are many other nail options in the Salem area, clients say Nails by Isla stands out for its quality, affordability, and personal touch.
“If you put in the effort and the time, all of your hard work will pay off,” said Thomas.
Thomas advises other students to pursue their business ideas as well.
