Sabrina Carpenter is set to star in a new movie musical adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland”. Carpenter has had a long term acting career, starring in various shows and movies like “Girl Meets World”,“The Hate U Give” as well as musicals like “Mean Girls” on Broadway as Cady Heron. Her theatricality is shown in current projects as a pop star, her newest album and six time Grammy nominee “Man’s Best Friend” and on her tours. Her music videos, costumes, sets and overall artistry are perfect theatrical qualities for starring in such a highly-anticipated movie.
Carpenter has expressed her love for the classic Lewis Caroll story. In 2022, Carpenter said on the “Elvis Duran and Morning Show” that she pitched the movie idea to Netflix, since Alice was one of her dream roles. In an interview with GQ (Gentlemen’s Quarterly), Carpenter said that her dream cast for this project would include Harry Styles, Childish Gambino and Kate McKinnon.
As well as starring in the film, Carpenter is also planning to produce it, alongside producer Marc Platt, who additionally produced “Wicked”, “Dear Evan Hansen” and “La La Land”. Lorne Scafaria is set to be the director, who has won countless awards for her work, such as Best Woman Screenwriter for the EDA (Excellent, Daring and Artistic) Female Focus Awards and two Emmy nominations.
Carpenter has made a big name for herself in the pop music industry, however it will be exciting to see her return to her acting career in this passion project. This is a common theme of famous actors returning to their musical theatre roots in the last year, with Ariana Grande in “Wicked”, Milo Manahiem and Liz Gilles in “Little Shop of Horrors”, and Meg Donally in “Moulin Rouge”. This acts not only as a way for actors to embrace their origins of fame, but to also bring a new audience to musical theatre.
