The Sky is the Limit for South Salem Girl Scouts

Every Girl Scout has their own curiosity, dreams and talents. When they come together to decide which of the Girl Scout activities to try, the sky is the limit. Activities could include visiting an animal shelter, camping, hosting a dance-off or even filming a movie. Girl Scouts are always learning to take risks, trust their gut and team up with others for good. Girl Scout Cookies were originally home baked by girl members with moms volunteering as technical advisers. Selling cookies to finance activities began as early as 1917, five years later Juliette Gordon Low started Girl Scouts.

South Salem High School students Cecelia Lipman ‘27 and Tuesday Garrison ‘27 are selling Girl Scout Cookies to raise money. All proceeds funding their troop trip to Olympia National Park. The trip consists of traveling by car and doing various activities like hiking, camping, outdoor skills and cooking.

History of South Salem’s Girl Scout Ambassadors

Lipman has been in the program for six years and just recently joined back into the Girl Scout environment, becoming an ambassador, the highest rank.

“Being an ambassador is valuable to me because I get to be a leader for cadets in my troop. Being in Girl Scouts teaches valuable lessons to the young women of this next generation,” Lipman said.

When Garrison was four years old a few girls and their moms were planning on starting a troop. Her mom began to work with them and she joined the troop when she turned five.

“When I was four I danced with a few other girls my age and a few of their moms were planning to start a troop. So my mom worked with them to form it and I joined right when I turned 5, which is the youngest you are allowed to join,” Garrison said.

Garrison has been in the program for 13.5 years. And this will be her 13 cookie season. Just like Lipman, Garrison is the highest rank, an ambassador.

“Being an ambassador Girl Scout means helping and growing. Now that I am almost done with Girl Scouts, I take a bigger part in leading younger girls in projects and activities. As well as badge work. For me, being an ambassador is a huge accomplishment. Currently, the number of Girls in GS is declining, and even though COVID-19 was hard and I wanted to drop many times. I stuck with it, and I am grateful every day for all the things I have gotten to do because of it,” Garrison said.

Coming Together as Partners

Being business partners has brought the two together and made them closer.

“Yes I think it has made us closer because now we work together as not just friends, but also business partners. Obviously, it is fun to hang out and be gals together. But when we are locked in on work together, we get to feel productive. It has also made me closer with some younger girls, who are really silly and fun,” Lipman said.

Having tried all cookies from over the years both Garrison and Lipman have their top favorites.

“I love Caramel Delights, which have chocolate, coconut, and caramel on a thin cookie, as well as the classic Thin Mints. But I do think they are all pretty great,” Garrison said.

“My favorite cookie is peanut butter patties. They are a crispy vanilla cookie topped with a layer of creamy peanut butter and covered in a fudge or dark chocolate coating. They have been my favorite cookies ever since I joined when I was six.”
