Donation Centers in Salem

For a lot of people winter means presents, cozy sweaters, and an overall joyful spirit of the holidays. But that is not how every person views this time of year. Some do not have warm clothes to wear, enough food to eat, or the same bed to sleep in each night. When the weather cools off, it can become a struggle for many people. Even if this is so, there are organizations that have been made to help these individuals and give them what they need to be healthy.
One of these organizations is The Union Gospel Mission [UGM]. Located at 901 Front Street NE Salem, OR. They are open for donations, and allow men, women, and children in for care.
“I am free of all the burdens I have had and all the sinning I have done. I don’t really have anything but the lord, but right now I have a lot,” said Michael, one person impacted by the help of the UGM. They are a Christian organization, and study the gospel. UGM provides three meals for men, women, and children. They also have a dental care clinic for the citizens that come in. “I know it is true recovery because it hurt as much as it healed.” Katie, another women who spoke about her recovery, said.
Another shelter that is helpful is Saint Francis Shelter, located at 1820 Berry Street SE, Salem, Oregon 97302. They provide temporary housing for homeless families. the housing is safe, and helps families get back onto their feet. 92 percent of the families that stayed at Saint Francis Shelter have been able to transfer into permanent housing within time. They also have a library that has arts and crafts, offers tutoring, and gives the children a place to go for help.
Lastly, The Lighthouse Shelter is also a place that helps men and women who can’t support themselves on their own. It is located at 1901 Front Street Salem OR. It holds up to 83 men and women, and allows them to stay for a three to six month duration. They get three meals a day, warm showers, and beds to sleep in. The Lighthouse Shelter’s goal is to fight against the struggle to have self sufficiency, and wants to help people in the community support themselves, and make better lives for them.
