Saxon Varsity Football Takes on Forest Grove

Saturday, October 29, 2016 – The South Salem Saxons varsity football team traveled to Forest Grove in hopes of ending their regular season on a good note.
It seems like the boys of the fall got what they wished for, as they defeated Forest Grove 46 to 8 Friday night. This is the highest score the Saxon varsity team has put up all year.
With this game, the Saxons finish off their season with a 4-6 record, a significant drop from their 10-1 record last year. The Saxons have struggled against some of the better teams in the Greater Valley Conference this year.
The story of the 2016 Saxons so far has been that it’s a building year. Towards the end of this season, the Saxons have had may sophomores step up and give the team a boost in a year plagued with injuries of upperclassmen. One of these sophomores is running back Ricky Villareal ‘19.
“One thing that popped out at me that we did well was staying together and picking each other up when someone’s head went down,” Villareal said. He also said that getting a win like that “gave our team the confidence and swagger we need for the playoffs.”
The Saxons’ first playoff game will be on Friday, November 4th, where they’ll take on Sheldon High School. The Saxons are the 27th seed in the 32 team bracket and Sheldon is the 6th. The game will take place at Sheldon in Eugene.
