Hundreds of people go without food everyday. Many organizations in the Salem area, including churches, food banks, and shelters, are helping those in need this holiday season so they can be able to have a traditional Thanksgiving experience like anyone else.
South Salem High School holds a Thanksgiving basket drive every year, where students bring various Thanksgiving food items that will help families in need, to prepare and have a traditional dinner on Thanksgiving day.
Outward Church has a goal of helping 200 families in need for the holidays this year. They gather volunteers to help shop for food, Christmas trees and to help prepare the Thanksgiving meal. On Thanksgiving day from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. the volunteers serve the food under the Marion street bridge.
The Salem Elks lodge will be hosting a free Thanksgiving meal from 11-2 p.m. on Turner road. It is open to everyone.
At the Salem Union Gospel Mission on Commercial, a Thanksgiving meal will be served from 11 p.m. to 2 p.m.
St. Edwards Church located in Keizer has many volunteers prepare and deliver dinner straight to the houses of families.
In West Salem, Life church also prepares and delivers food boxes to families in Salem on Nov. 19.
The Fellowship church serves meals to the needy under the Marion street bridge on Nov. 23 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
