The truth about Candy Corn

Many people have heard of the iconic Halloween staple; candy corn. However, there seems to be a very mixed opinion in the public eye about this sweet. This sparks a question; does candy corn deserve all the attention it gets around Halloween?

Candy corn is made of multiple ingredients, including sugar, gelatin, corn syrup, and honey. Other flavorings and colors are included in addition to the more well known ingredients.

It is debated on how candy corn became what some think of as a “default” Halloween candy. It could possibly be that it is so easy to mass produce and the fact comes in one-pound bags, making it plentiful. Not only that, but it is cheap as well, costing $3.99 per one-pound bag, at least on Nuts.com.

However, people tend to have very different tastes when it comes to the seemingly basic ingredients of candy corn. A poll by Morning Consult says that only 49 percent of people like candy corn, and 21 percent of those interviewed say that they think it is a fundamental part of Halloween, even though they do not like it, and 23 percent of people just think it is gross. As it stands, the whole “Candy Corn: Good or Bad” debate on Morning Consult is still quite divided..

In a poll with 28 random students from South, 14 liked candy corn, 13 did not, and 1 had never eaten it. This is very similar to the Morning Consult poll, as approximately 50 percent of people interviewed liked it, while most of the other 50 percent did not.

One of the students interviewed in the poll, Grant Sellers ‘21, also had a few things to say outside of the poll. “In my opinion candy corn is the [on the] lowest [level] of candies. It only has the flavor of sugar, making it more obsolete than most other candies” After asking if he thinks it should be iconic or not, he said “It should be iconic, for being mediocre”

So, as it turns out, South students tend to have a rather mixed opinion on candy corn, but it’s up to the reader to determine their opinion on this time tested confectionery. As for an answer to the question at hand; yes. Candy corn is a controversial topic, which is it’s reputation, and the reputation that made it popular, thus making it deserve all of the attention that it gets.
