Brazil’s New President

Throughout October, Brazil held its general election to determine the new head of state. Over the course of the month, Brazilians voted between Social Liberal Party candidate Jair Bolsonaro, and Workers Party candidate Fernando Haddad. The winner of the election was Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro is a former member of the Brazilian Army. He has made many remarks that seem sexist, racist, and homophobic, which made him a very controversial candidate. “I had four sons, but then I had a moment of weakness, and the fifth was a girl,” Bolsonaro said in an interview.

People globally have questioned if he is fit to hold the office of president. However, many people support him as well. “Bolsonaro has a very clear and transparent way of doing politics. He’s run a completely impartial campaign, he’s not accepted public money or money from businesspeople, so he’s been able to run a campaign that’s completely free of any compromises or political agreements,” a Bolsonaro supporter said in a BBC interview.

During one of his rallies, Bolsonaro was stabbed in the abdomen. The primary suspect, Adelio Obispo de Oliveira claimed he was “on a mission from God” to kill him. As a result, Bolsonaro suffered major injuries. His approval rating rose after this encounter.

Bolsonaro is set to take the office on Jan. 1 of 2019. He will replace current president Michel Temer.
