Saxon Baseball to Play West in the Second Round of OSAA Playoffs

The Saxons will be playing their league foe, the West Salem Titans, in the second round of the OSAA baseball state playoffs. The Titans have a 15-11 overall record and finished league play with a 6-6 record. They placed fourth in the league and ranked 20 heading into the OSAA Playoffs.

The Saxon Baseball team hosted the Sheldon Irish in the first round, on Monday, May 20. The Saxons were victorious, winning the game 9-4 to advance to the second round.

The Saxons found their bats early against the Irish, scoring eight runs off five hits in the bottom of the first inning. After three scoreless innings by both teams, catcher Greyson Hanowell ‘20 launched a solo-homerun over the right field fence and into the nearby creek next to Gilmore Field, giving the Saxons a 9-0 lead going into the sixth inning.

Starting Pitcher Sean Alvarado* had himself a good game on both sides of the diamond, allowing no runs through five innings and knocking in three runs for the Saxon offense.

Coming in relief, pitcher Ricky Alvarado ‘21 came in at the top of the sixth. After a scoreless inning, the Irish started a rally in the seventh inning, knocking in four runs (two earned). Noah Ferguson ‘19 then pitched the final two outs to finish the game and seal their first round win.
