Oregon Schools Closed For The Remainder Of The Semester

In a press conference on Wednesday, Apr. 8, Governor Kate Brown announced that Oregon public schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year, due to COVID-19. Schools are to continue “distance learning,” which is slated to officially begin at South on Monday, Apr. 13.

Brown announced that seniors will be given diplomas if they were on track to graduate when schools originally closed in March. This includes seniors who had all the credits necessary to graduate before this semester and those who currently have passing grades in all their classes required for graduation. Seniors who meet these requirements will graduate, even if they do not participate in distance learning.

Brown urged school districts to give students who have Fs in required courses special opportunities so that they will be able to graduate.

For students that are not seniors, distance learning will be a pass/no grade system. Per instruction from the Oregon Department of Education, students will have no more than 30 minutes of instruction from each teacher every day.

This is a breaking story and will be updated as the story develops.
