The construction at South, which started March 19, 2020, is coming to a close. The new additions have helped to enrich the students, teachers and learning environment, giving them a fresh start for the 2021-22 school year.
In the last year, the South building underwent extensive renovations. Workers tore down the Howard Street Charter School building and South’s historical Rose Auditorium, replacing it with a new wing.
“I love it. It feels a lot newer and more modern.” Mr. Riley, Social Studies and AVID teacher said, “The classrooms are nice but the real improvements are in culinary, video production, theatre and music. Those new spaces are amazing.” The new addition also features a larger student parking lot and an auxiliary gym in the south side of the building.
Though classes continue as usual the new building has brought opportunities to many students at South. The new building allows theater and News Production larger, more stable spaces to create and explore. The theater classes have a new auditorium to perform in while the news production class has new spaces to create podcasts and visual projects. It also allows all students in the new building to have a safe space to learn and explore. When asked about how he thought the construction changed South, History teacher Mr. Brown-Silverstein said, “Definitely for the better. It creates a better learning environment for our students”.
The construction at South had estimated completion by Sep. 1 2021. It is now nearing October and the construction is still going on while the crew finishes up the track at the south end of the school.
