The Salem Public Library’s Poetry Slam – Recap

On April 27th a poetry slam event was held in the Loucks auditorium at the Salem Public Library. The event lasted until 7:15 p.m. instead of 8:00 p.m. due to another event needing the space. During the event several people went up to the stage to read, some of them being people who had already signed up, and some of them taking open available spaces as they came up. Readers were offered trophies, pocket notebooks, and pens as prizes for reading. The environment was made to be very welcoming, and audience members clapped for everyone who went on stage. Each person who went up introduced their name, pronouns, the name of their poem, and any trigger warnings or background info the audience had to know before they started. After the readings the poets took a picture together, and the hosts of the event announced that they would make it a monthly event. The next event hasn’t been scheduled yet, but it will most likely be held at the Salem Public Library again.
