In the last few weeks, the Salem-Keizer School District has made multiple changes to the rules for spectators in the district. This changes the way student sections may act or behave at sports games. A few of these rules include no chants directed towards the competing team, no powder or confetti shall be used in stands from spectators and no signs over the size of 8 1⁄2 by 11 inches.
“This has been a part of the OSAA policy for a while now, and since then have been trying to promote better sportsmanship,” Administrator Brian Armstrong said.
The district has begun the process of adopting more of the sportsmanship and conduct rules the OSAA has in place, enforcing them throughout all sports.
“These rules aren’t directly targeted towards students, but for all spectators, including parents to keep everyone safe,” Armstrong said.
Salem-Keizer’s mission for no longer accepting disrespectful behavior towards all players and referees from spectators are a big part of Mr. Armstrong and the Saxon staff’s message.
“Hopefully it doesn’t get to that point, [to kick people out of games] but just as a friendly reminder that let’s be more positive as an alternative,” said Armstrong.
These new laws of etiquette are made to create a better environment for not only South students, but for the Salem-Keizer School District.
