Flashback Over the Decade

In honor of it being the first week of 2024 and being a decade since the year 2014, let’s take a look back at what were the most popular things in the last 10 years.

2014

According to ‘Billboard’s 2014 Year-End Hot 100 chart’ the top 3 popular songs were “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J and “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX. At the same time these were some of the clothing trends that were the most popular according to Vogue Magazine. Only wearing one earring was popular as well as Frayed Denim which could go from jeans to dresses. 

2015

According to ‘Billboard’s 2014 Year-End Hot 100 chart’ the top 3 most listened to songs were “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran and “See you again” by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth. With billboards List of Billboard 200 number-one albums of 2015. The tops albums were “1989” by Taylor Swift, “Title” by Megan Trainor, and lastly “American Beauty/American Psycho” by Fall Out Boy.

2016

Justin Bieber took the top 2 spots with the best songs “Love yourself” and “Sorry.” Drake had taken the third best song of the year with his song “One Dance” featuring Wizkid and Kyla according to ‘Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 2016’. According to Vogue Arabia Magazine, in the 90’s, chokers were popular but in 2016 they had bounced their way back into the fashion world. One of the most peaked trends of this year was the “Off the shoulder silhouette.”

2017

According to ‘Forbes Magazine’ these were the best selling albums of 2017. Coming in first place was “÷ (Divide)” Selling at 6.2 million by Ed Sheeran, in second place was “Reputation” at 4.5 million by Taylor Swift and in third place was selling at 1.8 million is Beautiful Trauma by Pink. According to ‘Life Magazine’ some pop culture moments that helped shape 2017 were Taylor Swift’s come back after almost a year of being out of the public, Ariana Grande’s benefit concert and Kendall Jenner’s Pepsi commercial. 

2018

Here are some of the most popular cultural moments that happened in 2018 according to ‘CNN News;. The artist “Childish Gambino” released his song titled “This is America” which in CNNs opinion this song dominated and could have been one of the best music videos of the year. Two other cultural moments of this year was the releasing of “Black Panther” directed by Ryan Coogler. This movie was set in a fictional African nation called “Wakanda” and was about celebrating black culture. Beyonce headlined Coachella, which was a big deal as she is the first black woman to headline Coachella.With Billboard’s 2018 Year-End Hot 100 Chart, the top three songs were “God’s plan” by Drake, “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran and “Meant to be” by Bebe Rexha featuring Florida Georgia Line. 

2019

In 2019 Disney had taken the top three spots for highest grossing movies of this year according to Wikipedia. Taking first place was “Avengers: Endgame” which made $2,799,439,100. Second place was “The live action Lion King” making $1,663,943,394 and coming in third was “Frozen 2” with $1,450,026,933. Going from colors on screens to colors on clothes, According to ‘Vogue’ magazine neon remained a big trend throughout the year. On the opposite side, punk fashion was also a popular clothing trend.

2020

While the world may have had a pause, the music industry was still going. According to’ Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 2020’. “Blinding Lights” by The Weekend took first place, coming in second was “Circles” by Post Malone and in third was “The Box” by Roddy Ricch. Some pop culture moments that happened during 2020 was the release of  the Netflix documentary “Tiger King: Mayhem and Madness.” This was also the year Michael Jordan released his documentary “The Last Dance.” 

2021 

In 2021 according to ‘Vogue Magazine’ Pangaia’s Neon Hoodie had also sold out during the pandemic. “Vivenne Westwood’s Pearl Choker” helped chokers make a comeback but this time in a lighter and bedazzled style. The “Yeezy’s Foam Runner” was a popular shoe everywhere daily. With the top albums of 2021 the List of Billboard 200 number-one albums of 2021 says that “Evermore” by Taylor Swift was the top album with “Whole lotta red” by Playboi Carti in second and once again “Evermore” taking third. 

  2022

According to ‘CNN News’  some of the top cultural moments of this year was Kendrick Lamar returning to the rap industry and released his first album “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers,” after five years of not releasing. When it comes to drama that happened this year the one argument that everyone was listening in on was the “Elmo and Rocco situation.” In 2021 Adele had released her album “30” and in 2022 was the top album. Following her was “Encanto” by many artist and “DS4EVER” by Gunna according to List of Billboard 200 number-one albums of 2022.

2023

2023 has just ended and list of ‘Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles in 2023’ released their end of the year chart. Sza’s song “Kill bill” was the top single, with Taylor Swift’s “Karma” featuring Ice spice following and lastly “Creepin” by Metro Boomin, The Weekend and 21 Savage. According to CNN some moments that shaped 2023 were all about three “mainstream” artists. Rihanna had made her NFL halftime show appearance along with announcing her second pregnancy and the summer of 2023 Beyonce and Taylor Swift both went on their tours “The Renaissance tour” and “The Eras Tour.”
