Chronic pain is ridden with cumulative aspects that affect an individual. However, with an increase of incurable pain, different solutions are considered in establishing the most comfortable solution. Some individuals may wish to choose to pull the plug completely; otherwise referred to as euthanasia. The solution gives individuals the opportunity to receive self-administered lethal injections when experiencing a terminal illness.

Different Types of Euthanasia and it’s Legalization

There are various compilations of euthanasia that are viewed as more morally sound, such as voluntary euthanasia, which allows a patient to consent to their requested death if on the terms of a debilitating illness. In the United States, this form of euthanasia is legalized in ten jurisdictions, those being; Washington, D.C. and the states of California, Oregon, Maine, New Jersey, Vermont, New Mexico, Hawaii, Colorado and Washington. However, the question of why this law has not been implemented across the United States is a recurring prompt. Although euthanasia is taking the life of an individual, it is in consideration of their own physical health and misery. Nonconsensual, or involuntary euthanasia is illegal in all 50 states. There is a distinct moral line between involuntary and voluntary in regards to the patient.

It is important to relinquish the pain of those who are physically suffering. Although a convoluted issue, allowing another human being to suffer on the forefront of one’s own unwillingness to let go is selfish. It is often difficult for friends and family to release their loved one’s despite their pain. However, it is necessary in specific circumstances.

What is MAiD?

MAiD, or “Medical Aid in Dying”, is a legalized death for the means of chronic illness along with severe mental health conditions. Currently only legalized in a small number of countries in Europe, the difference lies in the requirements being met with mental health conditions. Those that are deemed unlivable with their circumstances are eligible for MAid. Switzerland in particular considers even non-medicalized assisted death a civil right. The current countries involved in MAid are: Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg and as of 2023, Canada.

Depression seems paralyzing, so it is understandable that someone would want to release themselves from the mental anguish. However, I believe that certain solutions can be used to intercept the consensual passing. Every person deserves to live a fulfilling life.
