Since 2019, “Love Island USA” has premiered every summer as the American version of “Love Island UK.” This British version has always been the more popular version, however in 2024 with the release of season six, fans’ opinion began to change.
What is Love Island?
“Love Island” features ten contestants in a villa, where the goal is to romantically couple up with someone you connect with. “Bombshells” are contestants who enter periodically, and their goal is to couple up with an established contestant. One of the show’s best known twists is “Casa Amor”, which is around the halfway point of the season. “Casa Amor” tests couples by separating them for a few days into different villas. Similarly to “bombshells,” “Casa Amor Girls” and “Casa Amor Boys” bring in “Casa Amor” villas. This tests connections with existing islanders. “Casa Amor Boys” and “Casa Amor Girls” have the goal to couple up with the established contestants to be brought back to the “post-Casa Amor” villa. Throughout the season, cast members participate in fun challenges with each other, which is usually the focal point of the episode.
The viewers also help shape the show. Throughout the season, viewers are able to vote on certain topics, like favorite islanders, favorite couples or most compatible couples. This impacts when islanders have to vote off their own. Certain couples or islanders who receive the least amount of votes are vulnerable to elimination. By the finale, four couples remain. Viewers vote for their favorite, and whichever couple receives the most votes wins. The winning couple receives 100,000 dollars and the title of Love Island winners.
Season Six
Season six introduced many first-time viewers to the show. On social media, fans praise the cast’s chemistry, friendships and relationships. The standout stars were self-nicknamed “Powerpuff Gang,” (PPG). The trio is made up of the contestants Leah Kateb, Serena Page and JaNa Craig. Additionally, “PPGM” was the villa partners of the three, Miguel Harichi, Kordell Beckham and Kenny Rodriguez. The three couples placed top three in season six, with Beckham and Page winning first. Robert Rausch would also blow up this season from his sarcastic personality. Although he did not make it to the finale, he was one of the most memorable contestants from “Love Island USA.” After “Love Island USA,” Rausch won the reality competition show “The Traitors US.” He also did sponsorships with DoorDash, Sonic and Kosas Cosmetics.
“My favorite part about season six was how genuine and real everything felt. I mean personally, it felt like I was immersed because of friendships like “PPG,” but also in relationships like Aaron and Kaylor even though they are controversial. It just seemed like everything was real, and that the cast members really cared for each other even on bad terms,” Ailani Pulley ‘27 said.
Typically, when Love Island cast members leave the villa, they come back to social media with a noticeable amount of new followers. However, season six went above and beyond, with the breakout stars reaching millions. “PPG” and “PPGM” would blow up on social media, being the contestants who gained the most followers.
Season Seven
Following the unlikely success of season six, viewers had high hopes for season seven. Ultimately, season seven failed to capture the charm that made season six likeable for fans. They began questioning cast members’ authenticity and intentions post season six.
“Since ‘Love Island USA’ was not as popular seasons one through five, season six was authentic because the cast did not know a lot of people would be watching. Since season seven knew they had a bigger audience from season six being popular they were not acting like their real selves. I thought they were acting like middle schoolers. It felt like unnecessary drama and people hating on each other for no reason,” Xyla Phillips ‘27 said.
Though fans think the quality had dipped, season seven was the most-watched season. Due to the social media engagement and constant drama, former non-viewers felt as if they were missing out on a pop culture experience. Even those who refuse to watch the season were kept up to date from clips or recaps posted on social media from the daily episodes.
Inside Drama
Cast member Huda Mustafa’s behavior through season seven was a topic of conversation. Her toxicity toward fellow contestant Jeremiah Brown plagued the “pre-Casa” villa. Mustafa used profanities when referring to “bombshells” who expressed interest in Brown that concerned viewers. Mustafa would also verbally abuse Brown when he would try to console her. Despite her televised mental breakdowns, she still emerged from the show with a massive fanbase, comparable to any “PPG” member.
“I watched the first couple episodes of season seven and from those I knew I hated [Mustafa]. I could not finish it because of the way she was acting. I do not know why she still has fans because we all watched her be so toxic to everyone around her. I saw on TikTok that by the time the finale was over, she was single. I thought it was Love Island,” Keira Flores ‘28 said.
The winners of the seventh season were Amaya Espinal and Bryan Arenales. Espinal was the fan favorite, leading fans to vote for the couple for Espinal alone. The second-place couple was Nicolas Vansteenberghe and Olandria Carthen, nicknamed Nicolandria. Nicolandria was not just a couple, a die-hard fandom emerged. Fans pieced together small moments between the two, especially Vansteenberghe confessing his attraction for Carthen. These cinematic clips opened the eyes of those who missed these moments while watching. Many felt like it was a real life “slow-burn” trope, which is rare to see in Love Island. In episode 30, the two officially coupled up.
Season Eight
There is a lot of pressure for season eight to live up to the expectations. Fans are hopeful it closely follows the formula of season six, rather than the experimental changes made in season seven.
“I do not watch a lot of reality television, but after hearing good things about season six of Love Island USA, I gave it a try. I loved it so much and I definitely got the hype. For season eight, I hope they keep a lot of the same challenges from season six for it to have the same feel. This would be smart on the producer’s end of things because of the success of season six,” Marlee Flores ‘27 said.
Season eight will premiere June 2, 2026. The cast will release soon.
