On Oct. 2, the South Salem Saxons played the North Salem Vikings for the 70th Annual Mayor’s Cup. The Saxons won 51-35, making it the 52nd time the Saxons have won the Mayor’s Cup.
“We have worked hard all four years. Last year did not go to plan, but we turned it around. It was great,” Sam Johnson ‘27 said.
The tradition features a ceremonial coin toss conducted by Salem Mayor Julie Hoy. Hoy awards a trophy to the winning team. Last year, the Vikings won the Mayor’s Cup with a score of 49-32.
“He [Josh Vanlue] could have given up on us last year,” Johnson said. “He came into leadership in a tough situation and he did not give up on us. He pushes me to work harder.”
This win leaves the Saxons with a 5-0 record and ranked No. 3 in OSAA. Their next game is Oct. 9 against the Jefferson Democrats on Bennett Field at 7 p.m.
