South Salem Put on Condition One Lockdown

UPDATE: The armed man responsible for the lockdown of South and McKinley Elementary was arrested in Clark Creek Park Friday afternoon. Police originally responded to reports of an armed prowler at 1:30 p.m. earlier that day. In a Statesman Journal article, Salem police spokesman Lt. Dave Okada said when they searched the neighborhood the reports came from, near Vista Avenue SE and Summer Street SE, officers heard what sounded like gunshots.
UPDATE: The dangerous situation has been identified to take place between 14th, Fairview, Madrona, and Commercial Street. Those on bus routes 521 or 722, or those that walk or drive into that area are asked to report to the gym where further instructions will be given. Lara Tiffin came on the announcements to say that there is an armed man on the ground. For those that do live near those streets, parents can come pick up students.
Around 2 p.m. on Friday March 3, South was put into a condition one lockdown. Students stayed past the 2:20 p.m. bell. No information is available as of now as to what caused the lockdown.
A condition one lockdown is put into place after an external, off-campus danger is detected. For students, all outside activities are suspended, and students are cleared out of hallways into safe areas. Class continues as normal. Teachers lock all doors, and close all windows and blinds.
In order to preserve student safety, all those off campus and parents are asked to not approach the property and keep their distance. Staff and students should await instructions from the district and school officials.
Last week, North and Parrish were put on lockdown due to a juvenile being stabbed in the area.
